Need the auto insurance basics?
Choosing the right coverage levels
Of course you want to save money on auto insurance. It’s important to balance that by thinking about what might happen in case of an accident. When you’re selecting coverage levels, remember that paying a higher premium may help better with accident related expenses. If you want your premiums to be lower, you may need to pay more out of pocket when there's an accident.

Factors that affect the price
A lot goes into determining your auto insurance price, including things like the type of vehicle you drive, where you live, how much you drive, and your driving record as well as the coverages, deductibles and limits you select. In most states, your age, gender, and marital status may also be factors. In addition, many insurance companies consider certain credit characteristics where allowed by law when determining an individual's auto insurance premium.

Drive Safe & Save™
Empowering Your Drive®
Take control and get discounts up to 50%* on your auto insurance.
How It Works
You’re a good driver. With our Drive Safe & Save™ program, being a good driver actually gives you more control over how much you can save on your auto insurance. Here’s how it works: Using your vehicle’s OnStar, In-Drive or SYNC communication service, we collect basic information about your driving. We then use the information to calculate your discounts. The safer you drive, the more you save–it’s that easy.
Enroll in Drive Safe & Save
To get started, choose the state where your vehicle is registered.Don’t see your state? We’re always adding new ones so be sure to check back soon.
Not Familiar with Vehicle Communication Service?
Communication services from providers like OnStar, SYNC or In-Drive use technology that can help you be a safer and smarter driver. They offer a host of benefits that may include everything from GPS to emergency dispatch, vehicle diagnostics and more.See how Drive Safe & Save works with OnStar, SYNC and In-Drive:
Drive Safe & Save FAQs
Does enrolling in the Drive Safe & Save program guarantee me a discount?
Most customers who enroll in Drive Safe & Save will see a reduction in premiums. However, if you currently receive reduced premiums for low estimated annual mileage (under 7,500 miles annually for personal use) and your vehicle is actually driven more than that, your premium may increase at a future policy renewal period. Please contact your State Farm agent if you have further questions or for more information.
State Farm will request odometer information and, in some cases, driving characteristics, from the provider of your communication service approximately 30 days after you sign up for Drive Safe & Save. If we are unable to obtain odometer readings at that point, your State Farm agent will contact you. If you do not have the capability, we will remove the initial participation discounts starting from the effective date it was added. How often are my discounts calculated when I am enrolled with Drive Safe & Save?
Your premium is adjusted at each policy renewal period (every 6 months), and will be based on the information collected from your communication service up to that point. How is the Drive Safe & Save initial participation discount applied to a policy that is already in force? Will I receive a refund check when I sign up?
Your initial discount will be applied as of the effective date Drive Safe & Save is added to your policy. If your current policy term is paid in full, and the discount generates a credit of $10.00 or more, you will receive a refund check.
If the discount generates a credit of less than $10.00, the credit will be applied to your next policy term.
If there is a balance due for the current policy term, you will receive a revised balance due notice.
If your policy is on the State Farm Payment Plan (SFPP), a credit will be applied to the SFPP account and your monthly payment will be adjusted accordingly. Is Drive Safe & Save only for drivers with spotless driving records?
Drivers with less than perfect driving records are eligible for discounts with Drive Safe & Save. Can my auto premiums increase with Drive Safe & Save?
Drive Safe & Save only uses your driving information to calculate your discount. What are the benefits of Drive Safe & Save?
Enrolling in Drive Safe & Save can help you get discounts up to 50%* on your auto insurance.
*Discounts may vary by state. What if I have an older model car?
It depends on the communications service provider. Select 1981 or newer vehicles may be eligible for OnStar FMV. Visit onstar.com for details and system limitations. Any Ford, Lincoln or Mercury SYNC equipped vehicle may also be eligible. Visit ford.com/syncmyride for details and system limitations.

Auto Insurance Coverage Primer
Wondering what covers you and your vehicle in case of an accident? Wonder no more.
State Farm is there with the auto insurance coverage you need at a price you can afford — helping you in case of the unexpected.

Liability Coverage
How are you covered in case of an accident? You were distracted while backing out of a parking space and didn't see the car behind you until it was too late. You hit the car and you crashed through a fence too. Everyone in the other car seems fine, but the other driver and his passengers go to the emergency room just to make sure.
Liability Coverage pays damages due to bodily injury and property damages to others for which you are responsible. If you're sued, it also pays your defense and court costs. Medical expenses, pain and suffering, and lost wages are some examples of what Liability Bodily Injury may cover. Liability Property Damage covers damage to property and loss of its use.
How much coverage do you need?Every state sets a minimum coverage level. Selecting more than the minimum coverage would increase your cost now but potentially give you more protection in case of an accident. Since it's impossible to know the most you'd have to pay if you were to cause an accident that resulted in bodily injury or property damage, be sure to take some time and consider whether you'd be able to afford any damages that exceed your insurance coverage. The higher your limits, the more likely it is that we'll be able to pay all of the damages for you. Limits higher than the state minimum might be the best choice for you.
Medical Payments Coverage
How are you covered in case of an accident? You were stopped at a red light when another car hit yours. You were injured. Medical Payments Coverage will pay reasonable and necessary medical and funeral expenses for covered persons.
How much coverage do you need? The coverage is not required by most states, but it provides great coverage at an affordable price. The cost will correspond to the limits you select. There are no deductibles or copays, so this coverage can pay from the first dollar of incurred, covered expenses.
Collision Coverage
How are you covered in case of an accident? It's only a fender-bender, but the cost of the headlight, a new bumper, and a paint job can add up quickly. Collision Coverage will pay for damage to a covered vehicle caused by the following, subject to a deductible:- Collision with another vehicle
- Collision with an object
- A vehicle rollover
How high should your deductible be?Higher deductibles lower your premium but increase the amount you'll have to pay out of your own pocket at the time of a loss. Ask yourself how much you're willing to pay when a loss occurs to save money on premiums.
Comprehensive Coverage
How are you covered in case of an accident?Who'd have thought that little hailstones could do so much damage? Your car is covered with dozens of dents. This coverage helps pay for loss of or damage to an insured vehicle, not caused by a collision or vehicle rollover. Typically, that's coverage for the following, and it may be subject to a deductible.- Fire
- Wind
- Hail
- Flood
- Vandalism
- Theft
- Hitting an animal
How high should your deductible be?Higher deductibles lower your premium but increase the amount you'll have to pay out of your own pocket in case of a loss. Ask yourself how much you're willing to pay when a loss occurs to save money on premiums.
Uninsured Motor Vehicle Coverage
How are you covered in case of an accident? It's a sad fact: There are people who drive without any liability insurance. What if you're injured in an accident caused by one of these drivers? Uninsured Motorist Coverage will pay for damages when you are injured in a car accident caused by another person who does not have sufficient liability insurance. Medical expenses, pain and suffering, and lost wages are some examples of bodily injury damages.
Should you get this coverage?Doing so lets you decide how much coverage is potentially available to pay for your covered damages when you are in an accident caused by an uninsured motor vehicle.
Underinsured Motor Vehicle Coverage
How are you covered in case of an accident? Many drivers carry low limits of liability coverage. What if you're injured in an accident caused by an underinsured driver? Underinsured Vehicle Coverage will pay for damages when you are injured in a car accident caused by another person who does not have sufficient liability insurance. Medical expenses, pain and suffering, and lost wages are some examples of bodily injury damages.
Should you get this coverage?Doing so lets you decide how much coverage is available for your covered damages when are you in an accident caused by an underinsured motor vehicle.
Car Rental and Travel Expenses Coverage
How are you covered in case of an accident?Your car is in the shop after a collision. Rental Reimbursement pays the cost of renting a replacement vehicle so you don't have to interrupt your daily routine. Daily allowances or limits vary by state.
Should you get this coverage?Consider how you'd get to work, school, or the store if your car were out of commission. If you depend on having a car available, could you afford to pay for a rental car yourself?
Emergency Road Service
How are you covered? You're in the middle of nowhere. The last gas station was miles ago. Suddenly, all of your power goes. The car coasts to a stop. Emergency Road Service will reimburse you for fair costs associated with towing, a jump start, or other things you need to get on your way. Examples of other items typically covered includes repair of a flat tire or locksmith services to get into a covered vehicle if you're locked out. Coverage limits vary by state.
Should you get this coverage?Consider how much you could afford to pay out of your own pocket if you were stranded.
